Hello! I'm Wendy Cohen, Founder of Family Matters Therapy, and my passion is helping families—that's been my life's work. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field in Chicago. For 15 years, I dedicated myself to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families at Misericordia Home. Later, at The Cradle, I assisted families through the challenging pre- and post-adoption processes. Drawing from my background, I spent five years in North shore schools working with K-12 students, addressing their social-emotional and executive-functioning needs. I helped them set goals, manage their moods, and regulate behavior for academic and personal success. Additionally, I provided college and career counseling at the high school level, often guiding students and families through crises and trauma recovery. Personally and professionally, I've navigated the complexities of school systems to secure support through IEPs and 504 plans, advocating for children alongside teachers and administrators. Recognizing the interconnectedness of family dynamics, I frequently incorporate therapy with parents, spouses, and siblings. I have found a love for parent coaching and family therapy. My approach is practical and solution-focused, tailored to each client's unique needs. I integrate creative methods like hands-on therapy, art, and play to facilitate expression and focus. In addition to traditional therapy, I offer specialized services including parent coaching, executive functioning coaching, sound healing, and Reiki sessions. My practice also includes Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy for individuals, couples and small groups, which I offer in a comfortable, living room-like office setting or in clients' homes. Remote sessions are available upon request, ensuring flexibility and accessibility. I understand firsthand the challenges of parenthood, having navigated single motherhood, survived breast cancer, and co-headed a blended family. Today, I am grateful for my supportive husband and a family of four adult daughters. I'm intimately familiar with the highs and lows of family life—the slamming doors, eye rolling, stomping feet, and the transformative power of small successes. Parenting doesn't come with a manual—it's a mysterious journey. Guiding parents through this journey and celebrating their successes is one of my missions. If you're ready to take the first step, I offer a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation. Reach out to schedule an appointment, and let's discuss how I can support you in finding the help you need.
