Introduction

Dr. Vanessa R. Abernathy is a Clinical Psychologist, Mindset Consultant and Liberation Theologian whose aim it is to transform systems that oppress people, such that people might rise from surviving to thriving. She provides psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families in her California and North Carolina practices. Her clinical interests include, but are not limited to, emotional abuse recovery, identity development in LGBTQQIA+ college students, integration of spirituality and psychology and recovery from interpersonal injury such as infidelity. In the future, she would like to partner with other invested professionals to raise awareness and facilitate reform in the U.S. Family Court system as it relates to emotional, verbal, financial and spiritual abuse in divorce cases. With empathy and openness, I help clients live in more authentic ways. I focus on a client's internal motivations for change in order to address what may NOT be working well for them, or to strengthen and maintain what may be working well enough. Clients who work with me in couple’s counseling, experience me as affirming, fair, balanced, reflective and interactive as needed. I am here to help clients identify and reclaim their core values and find healthy ways to live out those values, in order to enhance client health, wellness and success.
