As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am committed to upholding your confidentiality and privacy during our therapeutic sessions. While confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of our professional relationship, there are circumstances under which I am mandated to disclose information. In accordance with the state regulations where I practice, there are both permissive and mandatory exceptions to confidentiality. Mandatory reporting of child abuse or neglect is required if there is reasonable suspicion during our sessions. Furthermore, specific actions, including involving law enforcement, may be necessary if I assess an imminent danger to yourself or others. If you are utilizing insurance for mental health treatment, it is essential to disclose the mental disorder for which you are receiving treatment to facilitate payment. In legal proceedings, treatment records may become accessible to the opposing party, and I may be called upon to testify about your treatment. Additionally, it is paramount for our professional relationship to be underpinned by clear boundaries. This dictates that I will refrain from engaging with you outside of our therapy sessions, including attending personal functions or acknowledging you in public settings. It is essential to understand that psychotherapy involves self-discovery and may bring about challenging emotions and experiences. Risks are inherent in this process; however, I'm dedicated to helping you through these challenges. If you need more details on the exceptions to confidentiality, please feel free to ask. I aim to ensure you are well-informed and at ease as we embark on our therapeutic partnership.
