Introduction

The birch tree is known as the tree of beginnings and symbolizes renewal. Birchwood Psychotherapy honors that meaning in the belief in therapy and the hope we bring to each of our clients. We specialize in anxiety, depression, relationship issues, family conflict along with navigating pregnancy, postpartum & perinatal loss. Whatever brought you here- this is where you can reset and move forward with purpose and intention. Shannon De Ycaza is a licensed Mental Health Counselor in CT & NY offering individual and couples counseling. She takes a collaborative approach in helping her clients make meaning out of their experiences through active reflection. She has seen repeatedly how processing one's story, along with having tools and strategies for the future, gives a sense of agency and empowerment towards transformation. She focuses on the relationship she has with her clients and strives to create a calm and judgment-free space. Shannon works from a Psychodynamic and Person-centered perspective, integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) when needed. This eclectic approach allows Shannon to develop a thorough conceptualization of what brought her clients to therapy as well as an active plan for the present and future, tailored to her clients’ needs and goals. Shannon holds a B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University and a M.S. degree in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. She is certified by the Seleni Institute, specializing in maternal mental health, and completed clinical training for couples counseling from the Gottman Institute. Shannon has over 5 years experience at a group private practice located in midtown Manhattan, the Wellness Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and almost 10 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center assisting with patient care.
