Introduction

Salma Vir-Banks (she/they) is an Afro-South Asian licensed mental health counselor and art therapist. She currently resides in Taos, NM on Tiwa land. In addition to therapy and counseling, Salma is an interdisciplinary artist and designer. Salma has always maintained a passion for the intersection of art and healing and hopes to support clients as they heal through creative means. Salma works with a wide range of populations including adults, teens, couples, and families. She believes therapy can be a form of social justice as personal transformation can support social transformation. Salma is particularly interested in working with BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, differently abled, and gender non-conforming clients to support their navigation through marginalizing social realities. This work is deeply informed by Salma’s undergraduate studies in Ethnic Studies and Global Poverty Studies. Salma’s areas of treatment include substance abuse and process addictions, eating disorders, relational issues, family systems, attachment issues and codependency, multicultural issues, trauma, grief, and human sexuality. Working collaboratively with her clients, Salma uses a variety of modalities to address client concerns including talk therapy, art therapy, somatic experience, and eco therapy. On her off time Salma enjoys spending time with her partner and their pup, making art, and consuming inordinate amounts of sci-fi and horror content.
