Welcome to my page and thank you for visiting. My name is Peter Vandersteen, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) in Idaho. I am also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Washington. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Idaho in the 1990's. I chose a few different career paths along the way before realizing that helping others is what I'm most passionate about. In 2011, I graduated from the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies in Center City, MN, now known as the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies (a very long name). I aspire to help individuals who struggle with mental health and/or addictions. During my time working as an addictions counselor, it became evident how addictions and mental health disorders are often intertwined. People with substance use disorders are at particular risk for developing one or more primary conditions or chronic diseases. The coexistence of both a mental illness and a substance use disorder, known as a co-occurring disorder, is common among people in treatment. In 2018, I became licensed as a mental health counselor in order to provide holistic treatment to my clients. I am also a certified EMDR therapist, specializing in trauma. My practice offers services to anyone struggling with mental health AND/OR substance use disorders. By no means is it required that you struggle with substances. Rather, I offer additional expertise in this area. I frequently work with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, PTSD, complex trauma, bipolar disorder, life transitions, relationships/communication, and/or substance use disorders, to name a few.
