Introduction

Maybe you’ve avoided therapy in the past because society has told you that something has to be “wrong” with you in order to engage in services. Perhaps you come from a cultural or family background that has a sense of shame or fear as it relates to mental health or processing your lived experiences. Nothing’s “wrong” with you. I am here with you! I believe that therapy is a mutually transformative experience. I know that when we interact together we are building a relationship and I accept you as you are. Healing is through the unfolding process of our relationship building. When you work with me you will never have to question where you stand in the relationship. I will regularly let you know how I am experiencing you in this relationship, so that you can then engage in growth fostering relationships in your own community. I am a first-generation college graduate, Mexicana, and disrupter of patriarchal constructs of emotion and “illness” within the mental health field. I have dedicated my life to making a difference in my community and am honored to walk with you on your journey! I specialize in working the families and children who are seeking to identify their cultural strengths and heal their cultural wounding. Background & Experience I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas where I received my MA in Clinical Mental Health from Texas State University, as well as my Ph.D. in Counseling. Additionally, I am a Registered Play Therapist, Child-Centered Play Therapy-Supervisor/Child-Parent Relationship Therapy-Supervisor, a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist, and have a Sandtray Therapy Certification. My first experience as a clinician in the community was through a non-profit organization. I worked as a clinician and advocate particularly with the Spanish speaking immigrant community. During my tenure, I provided individual and group counseling services at schools, detention centers, and community clinics. I also worked with interdisciplinary team such as teachers, social workers, attorneys, and CASAs to provide multimodal services for clients and their families. Additionally, I received my doctoral degree at the University of North Texas (UNT) where I specialized in play therapy, advocacy, liberatory and anti-oppressive practices for racialized and minoritized communities. During my time at UNT, I had experience teaching and supervising counselors-in-training, while facilitating research practices that centralize the voices of our communities. My training has led me to working with populations who experience attachment ruptures and trauma that manifested into sex/porn addiction and sexual compulsive behaviors. I also work with individuals who experienced betrayal trauma and infidelity from their partner or partners. As a bilingual counselor and play therapist, I serve clients across the life span and across environments. As a result in 2017 when hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico, I joined other clinicians in the disaster and crisis response efforts. I continue to collaborate with mental health professional from Puerto Rico by providing play therapy education and consultation. Since then, I have established a clinical and research interest in disaster mental health. While I carry marginalized and oppressed identities, I must always reflect on my areas of privilege and how these impact my work as a clinician, researcher, supervisor, and educator. As such, I continue to educate myself both personally and professionally by regularly attending workshops, conferences, consultations, peer-debriefings, and continued education.
