My name is Miles Oakner, and I am a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My approach to counseling is unique, as I utilize active therapy through sports, art, games, music, and many other activities, as a means of connecting with my clients. Children and teens are more comfortably open to process their emotions and build a positive therapeutic relationship when engaging in fun activities, such as tossing a football, drawing a picture, or playing a board game. I believe that therapy is an experience that a child can enjoy, rather than dread. I favor strength-based therapy, meaning, clients will work in sessions to improve their mindset and develop a positive view of their daily life and overall world, enhancing the strengths they already possess. Clients will be able to perceive themselves as resourceful and resilient when faced with adversity. I also incorporate positive psychology, encouraging clients to develop an optimistic future, using positive coping methods, as well as increasing self-esteem and confidence.
