Introduction

My name is Meagan Narvaez (she/her pronouns). I am a queer Woman of Color from a Puerto Rican family. As a sex therapist, my passions and specializations are within the realm of race, sexuality, gender, and pleasure. I wholeheartedly believe in pleasure activism––the idea that humans are not meant to live in a constant state of suffering. I use this framework as a positive direction for clients to embrace and hold sacred what is pleasurable for them. I know that different health issues can impact one another and create obstacles to change. My role in your care is to help give you the skills to overcome those obstacles for a more meaningful life. This includes creating a safe place for you to break down the barriers that get in the way of sexual pleasure. There are many reasons why sex gets pushed aside, but doing something about it can feel like an uphill battle. Many clients I work with say that they and their partners are best friends. But when it comes to intimacy, they feel like strangers. In the past, I worked in community behavioral health. Most of my clients had a combination of mental health and substance use issues. Because community mental health serves individuals using government-funded healthcare, most of my clients were low-income, and some were living on the street. People in marginalized circumstances are resilient survivors. I helped clients face a wide range of health challenges, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, psychosis, drug and alcohol use. These health challenges often coincided with physical health issues and disabilities. Note on asexuality: I acknowledge the language around sex therapy can seem excluding of asexuality, or that if there is a lack of sexual desire, or that you must do something to fix it. If you identify or think you may identify as asexual, I am here to help support you around your identity and find ways to navigate what intimacy and sexual expression means to you and your relationship(s).
