According to the American Psychological Association, “Psychologists help people of all ages live happier, healthier and more productive lives.” Dr. D'Ortona has been a licensed clinical psychologist for 26 years and received his doctoral degree from the University of Hartford’s Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology. He completed his internship training at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. He was very fortunate to have the opportunity to obtain post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Cognitive Therapy, and study with Dr. Aaron T. Beck, the founder of Cognitive Therapy, as well as other cognitive therapy experts including Dr. Cory F. Newman and Dr. Judith Beck. His clinical areas of expertise include the treatment of panic disorder, depression, phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is well-versed in psychological testing and also has served as an expert witness for the Tompkins, Chemung, Schuyler, Yates, Chenango, and Cortland County Family Courts. Dr. D’Ortona began his psychology career at UHS Binghamton General Hospital, where he served as Coordinator of the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic and Chief Psychologist. After leaving the hospital, Dr. D’Ortona joined the private group practice, Affiliated Psychological Consultants, PC, where he practiced for close to 18 years, and also was a partner in the practice, until its dissolution in September 2017. Since September 2017, he has been employed full-time by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance-Division of Disability Determinations and currently maintains a part-time private practice. Dr. D'Ortona specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is an evidenced-based, empirically-validated therapy that subscribes to the basic concept that “the way one thinks about things, affects how one feels emotionally, how one sees the world and oneself, influences what one does, and how one sees the future”. He also is a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive & Behavioral Therapies, which is an internationally accepted accrediting body for clinicians who desire to be recognized for their advanced training and practice experience in cognitive therapy. Dr. D'Ortona is only one of several clinicians in the Upstate NY & Northern Tier of PA regions to hold such a distinction of expertise. Of course, other therapeutic methods or models to treat the problems that you hope to address may be used. Psychotherapy calls for a very active, collaborative effort, and in order for the therapy to be most successful, it is expected that you will work on the issues we talk about both during our sessions and at home. Our work is a collaborative partnership. The on-going goal for my patients is to learn and use the life-changing cognitive therapy skills to help them cope with any of life’s various obstacles, long after they have formally ended therapy. I look forward to working with you!
