Introduction

I am a Licensed Psychologist with a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Texas Woman’s University. I am trained as a generalist, which means I have the skills to utilize a number of evidence-based approaches that can help with most issues for which people seek therapy. I work especially well with people who are seeking relief from anxiety, struggling with self-criticism or perfectionism, wanting to develop a greater sense of self-worth, or striving towards a more balanced life. I have training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and I specialize in issues impacting women across the lifespan: body image concerns, assertiveness, and reproductive issues (transitions with pregnancy and parenting, infertility, adoption, coping with menopause). Working with clients who experience marginalization and oppression is another area on which I focus and I strive to create a culturally affirming space with my clients. I work from a collaborative, strengths-based approach, tailoring therapy to your unique needs and goals. I believe in the power of a nonjudgmental, open, accepting space where you can be yourself, express your feelings, and reconnect with parts of yourself that you have disconnected from. In this process, we would work towards clarity, connection, zest, and self-compassion. My approach is integrative, combining Relational Cultural, Person-Centered, Feminist, and Cognitive-Behavioral theories of psychotherapy. Cultural humility is a cornerstone of my therapeutic style. In our work, I aim to honor your identities and I value exploration of systemic barriers (i.e. institutionalized racism, sexism, abelism, etc.) that undoubtedly impact our experiences. Considering therapy is a brave step – one that can change your life for the better. It takes courage to ask for help. I appreciate you considering me as a partner for you in this process and I would value the chance to speak with you for a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if we might be a good fit. May you find greater peace, connection & wellbeing as you move forward in your journey. Call Dr. Martha Bergen at 972-656-8208 to schedule a free phone consultation.
