I received my Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Virginia Tech's Counselor Education program in 2006. Virginia Tech's program has been accredited by CACREP since 2000 to ensure excellence in counselor preparation. Upon graduation, I accepted a position as an outpatient substance abuse therapist at a local community mental health agency and served high risk populations for over eight years providing services to individuals recovering from substance abuse disorders as well as co-occurring diagnoses including mood disorders, personality disorders, and process addictions. I worked with the Department of Corrections and the local Drug Court program to assist individuals with treatment alternatives to incarceration which offered many people the opportunity for recovery. I received training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy from instructors at The Linehan Institute/Behavioral Tech and participated on a DBT consultation team for 5 years. I also served on a Trauma Consultation Team for 8 years during which time my focus was on trauma-informed treatment. During my career I have led multiple therapy groups including Men's TREM (Trauma Recovery and Empowerment), ATRIUM (Addictions and Trauma Recovery Integration Model), Motivational Enhancement, and Trauma-Informed substance abuse groups. In 2014, I established a private practice to continue to develop a trauma-informed approach to therapy which focuses on quality of life, connection, and personal growth.
