Hello! My name is Kelly. A little about me: She/They. Partnered with 3 rescue cats. US Air Force Iraq Veteran. Avid reader. Feminist. Neurodivergent. I'm still continuing my story of self-discovery & identity as 'human'. This spans multiple aspects of my life, including my identity, privilege, and values. The journey thus far has led me to include a commitment toward my continued education in anti-racism where I learn from BIPOC individuals. This includes continuing education, reading, and listening to the stories of those within the community and the impacts of oppression and colonization that still impact communities to this day. By doing so, I hope to find ways to be an advocate through amplifying the voices of those I learn from and not centering my own. Approach to Counseling: I understand that everyone comes to therapy from their own personal walks of life. By maintaining a safe environment, free from judgment, we are able to work together in the process of living a healthier and fuller life. Everyone comes to therapy for their own personal reasons, which ranges from needing a place for non-judgmental support while working through everyday struggles, to finding a way of processing and coping with severe trauma impacting their everyday life. I am passionate about working with and advocating for veteran and LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Each struggles with its own sets of battles, which can overlap and conflict with each other, causing inner turmoil for someone who finds themselves with a foot in each community without support. In addition to the above experience, I have worked with those struggling with guilt, anger, PTSD, moral injury, grief, and self-medication. I understand most of these issues tend to impact the other, which makes it more difficult to manage. By highlighting and encouraging growth, we can work together to find the internal blocks which are limiting your ability to move forward and heal. My therapeutic approach stems from Existential and Humanistic therapies; integrating Decolonization, Multicultural, and Interpersonal Counseling approaches; and combining skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to best serve individual needs. I started my career in mental health in my practicum and internship providing substance use and dependency, trauma, grief, and suicide prevention treatments at the domiciliary located at the Canandaigua, NY Veterans Affairs hospital. From there I have continued working with Veterans and Active Duty Service Members through both the Canandaigua, NY & Atlanta, GA Veterans Affairs by providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services. From the beginning of 2020 to end of 2021, I worked part-time in private practice under direction and supervision, conducting individual therapy with adult clients, focusing on grief, identity, trauma, substance use, and more. 1 Jan 2022, I started my own part-time private practice to embark on a new chapter of working independently with my clients and building inclusive and vital trainings to foster education and understanding of crisis interventions and the Veteran/Military communities.
