Introduction

I am a clinical psychologist with 15 years of therapy experience. My perspective is that just about everyone could use the help of a therapist at some point during their lives, whether for chronic mental health issues or due to confronting a change, trauma, or loss that is too much to deal with alone. My training in Motivational Interviewing guides my practice philosophy. Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic strategy to help people move past ambivalence and make the changes that they want to make in their lives. In my experience, people often come to therapy when they have tried to make changes on their own but are still feeling “stuck.” My role is to help you move past the stuck feeling. You are the expert on yourself, but I can contribute my expertise in how people move forward and successfully make changes. Prior to starting my own practice, I had 12 years’ experience in primary care and specialty care medical settings at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Working in a medical setting helped me to develop expertise in generalist psychological care, as well as specific skills in supporting patients coping with chronic, severe, and/or terminal medical illnesses. I have supported many patients through the stress and isolation of living with chronic health issues, coping with autoimmune disease and other “invisible illnesses,” and adjusting to changes in lifestyle related to new diagnoses. Additionally, I gained experience treating healthcare professionals for issues like compassion fatigue and burnout. I take seriously the role that each person’s culture, history, and context play in their overall psychological makeup. I honor the strength, resiliency, and wisdom that can come from each person’s culture. I am reflective about how experiences of poverty and racism can impact a person’s mental health. I have lived in New Mexico most of my life since childhood, granting me a deep understanding of the cultures and history of our state. I seek out educational opportunities and engage in self-reflection to make sure that I am providing therapy that is grounded in anti-racism. Through my training in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, I have a lot of experience working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and strive to create a safe space for everyone. Dating and sex are an important part of people’s overall well-being, and as a therapist I strive to be open-minded and educated about a variety of relationship structures and sexual interests to best serve all my patients. I look forward to getting to know you and working together to help you achieve your therapy goals!
