Joseph Murabito is a registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist #136784 supervised under Dr. Thomas Lucking, PhD, LMFT 97696. He has received his Masters of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology with Health Emphasis from Santa Clara University. As a counselor, his main goal is to help each client improve their overall subjective well-being, with particular attention to body, mind, and spirit. In the therapy environment he mainly adopts a person-centered approach to counseling, being inspired by psychotherapist Carl Rogers’s concept of unconditional positive regard,. Within this approach, it is his main goal to provide clients with a safe and inviting space for them to share their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to feel truly heard and validated. Throughout this process, clients may then get in touch with their authentic selves where they may learn to develop greater appreciation and acceptance for who they are. He also believes that there are always areas for growth and learning in one’s lifelong journey, as his goal in therapy is to guide clients towards recognizing their potential for creating meaningful changes in their lives. He also utilizes a strengths-based approach to therapy, where he attends to and reflects back strengths that clients bring to the therapeutic process. He believes that every individual has something valuable to offer, where clients can be guided towards recognizing special qualities they possess within themselves. In working with the unique expression of each client, he is also open and willing to incorporate other modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or Adlerian play therapy, if they are clinically appropriate and beneficial. When interacting with clients, he also attends to their cultural values. This involves both respecting and developing a sense of curiosity regarding their cultural beliefs and practices. He also displays an attitude of cultural humility, which involves the belief that there are always areas to learn in exploring the cultural values of others. Additionally, he identifies himself as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and aims to help each individual in this community feel validated for their unique self.
