Some of my clients have had encouraging outcomes as they come in dealing with the effects of chronic pain, relationship conflict, work stress, wrestling with addiction in the family system, and specific trauma hurts. What many people don't understand when they are looking for solutions to some of these problems is that one of the best ways to feel better is by focusing on what is happening in the body's nervous system. Many people have conflict with their body when it stubbornly holds on to trauma. Big and small conflicts. Stress that slowly floods like the Mississippi River in spring. Repeatedly being stopped by fear when trying new things. Panic crumbling our confidence as our career crashes. Immune systems attacking everything and is now Chronic Pain. Nightmares when our eyes are closed or wide open. "Waking the Tiger," by Peter Levine, brought into view some of these confusing survival skills in the body. As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I offer my clients access to the body's other skill - to safely release the energy of trauma. When that energy is safely released there is more space in the nervous system for the normal ways the body and emotions are created to work for us. That is usually my clients' goal when I counsel with them.
