Many people can find life's changes and stressors challenging and can benefit from the services of a psychologist. Psychotherapy can help to alleviate distress, improve relationships, and further personal growth. Key components to my practice include engagement, meaning-making, understanding your values, and self-acceptance. Life tends to parallel therapy; therefore, I wish for you to be an active participant in therapy just as I wish for you to be actively engaged and connected in your life. Emotions are also core to understanding ourselves and our spheres. Honoring the wisdom of the body flows from and informs each of these elements of therapy. With 15 years psychotherapy experience as a private practitioner and a professor, I work with individuals and couples to enhance coping skills, including emotional awareness and resilience building, and to learn new ways of thinking and interacting to improve quality of life and relationships, and to find meaning. Integrative in nature, I draw from cognitive behavior therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, existential, interpersonal and mindfulness modalities. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama Birmingham, I taught Advanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy. My areas of clinical focus include life transitions, anxiety, grief, interpersonal relationships, trauma & PTSD, and sexuality. See the "About My Practice" page of my website for additional information about my therapeutic approach. Located in Indiana and authorized to practice in all PsyPact states. https://hammelpsychological.com/
