Introduction

MY PRACTICE I currently run a private psychotherapy practice, offering both telehealth and in person sessions in Redmond, WA. I work with adolescent and adult individual clients, as well as couples and alternative relationship and family structures. My individual sessions are typically 55 minutes, and my relational/couples sessions are 75 minutes. I also offer intensives to couples who prefer to focus for 3-6 hours at a time. Intensive therapy sessions can help relationships gain understanding, connection, and traction more quickly than weekly sessions. I also supervise master’s-level and doctoral clinicians preparing for licensure. Finally, I provide consultation for clinicians looking for professional support regarding complicated individual and relational cases, professional practice and business development, and ethical concerns. MY TRAINING I have extensive training and experience as a clinical psychologist, having begun my professional training in 1996. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of settings including schools, health care clinics, eating disorder clinics, private practice, and a mental health group practice that I started, grew, and eventually sold, so that I could return to my original love of clinical private practice. Although I am capable of working with a wide variety of presenting problems, my current clinical focus is couples and relationships; including heterosexual, queer, and trans relationships, monogamous and non-monogamous relationships, and all variety of sexual concerns and lifestyles with a sex-positive and culturally sensitive lens. As most professional therapists do, I take an integrative approach to individual and relational therapy work. My original training and foundational development was primarily psychodynamic (postmodern, intersubjective), feminist, family systems, and health psychology focused. I have been working with survivors of sexual trauma throughout my career. More recently, to enhance my relational and sex therapy skills, I am seeking a dual certification in couples and sex therapy from the Integrative Sex Therapy Institute and American Association for Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). I am also seeking certification in consensual non-monogamy from the Institute for Relational Intimacy. In these programs, I am receiving extensive training in the Developmental Model, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Emotionally-Focused Therapy. I value understanding the impact of attachment styles and trauma on relationships, facilitating interpersonal emotional regulation. And I work to help individuals build the needed skills to show up as their most differentiated selves in their relationships. My sex therapy training prepares me to work with sexual concerns of all kinds, including sexual dysfunction, desire discrepancies, out of control sexual behavior, sexual trauma recovery, and the exploration of new sexual and relationship interests. I am kink, BDSM, and ENM/CNM/polyamory friendly. My supervision training and experience are also extensive. I have taken several courses to enhance my supervision skills throughout my career. I have been an active and approved supervisor in WA since 2009. I have successfully supervised master’s interns and LMHC/LMFT/LCSW Associates, as well as doctoral practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral fellows. In fact, training and mentoring fellow therapists has been a primary mission of my career and a driving value that motivated me to start and grow a group practice. LightHeart Associates continues to be a rich training ground and supportive environment for early career therapists and psychologists, even though I am no longer at the helm. I adhere to the Codes of Ethics of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Association for Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT)in both my clinical and supervisory capacities. SUPERVISION When I work in supervision, I usually meet weekly or every other week with the supervisee, generally for 50 minutes. Supervisees may also choose to schedule with me on an as-needed basis. My responsibilities include approaching my supervision relationships with authenticity and curiosity, professional respect and positive regard, timeliness, and mentorship with integrity. My responsibilities also include providing direct, clear, and honest feedback to the supervisee about their clinical work, assessing whether any ethical issues are addressed properly, formally evaluating the supervisee’s work when appropriate, and attending to the welfare of clients receiving services. I also believe it is essential to guide supervisees to focus on self-care and personal development, which may include personal therapy, to manage personal biases, vulnerabilities, and vicarious trauma. I also strive to serve as a model of professional conduct and guide the supervisee in their development of a professional identity, while taking seriously the additional responsibility of protecting the welfare of the public.
