Introduction

My name is Heather Katafiasz, PhD (AKA "Dr.K"). I am an independently licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with supervisor designation in the state of Ohio and an AAMFT approved supervisor. In addition to working with individuals, I specialize in working with couples and families. I believe that clear communication is the key to feeling connected and satisfied within relationships. It is often that lack of communication, whether it be due to individual symptoms (ex: anxiety, depression, chronic pain or medical issues), traumas in relationships (such as infidelity), or simply too many life tasks that take time away from prioritizing our relationships, that leads to conflict and a feeling of disconnection or dissatisfaction. In therapy, I will work with you on improving your communication, attempt balance the perspective of each member of the couple or family, and creating healthy boundaries so that everyone feels heard and understood. In addition to my current work in private practice, I have experience in an integrated healthcare setting at a Primary Care Physician Office, a substance use treatment center, a community mental health agency providing home and community based work, on clinical research trials for new therapeutic approaches, and a university training clinic. My approach to supervision focuses on three main components: 1) A developmental perspective, understanding where the clinician is at and their individual needs for supervision. 2) Clinical conceptualization, highlighting systemic processing and helping the clinician develop their own theory of therapy. and 3) Self-of-the-therapist, exploring how who they are impacts their approach to therapy, their ability to intervene, and their relationships with clients. Additionally, I value being a resource supplier, whether that is relational resources by connecting supervisees with others to create community, sharing interventions so that every supervisee always feels like their toolbox is full, and information, so that every supervisee feels like they have all of the information to make informed decision about their own practice.
