Introduction

I am a clinical psychologist, licensed in New York, New Jersey, and South Carolina, with over 30 years of experience in private practice. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, relationships, work/career, and other life transitions. My clients describe my style as warm, caring, compassionate, and interactive. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and culturally sensitive space. I was formerly an assistant professor of psychology at Penn State Harrisburg and past director of family services at a mental health center. I authored/co-authored over a dozen published articles and book chapters on family relationships and am a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, and National Register of Health Service Psychologists. What I Provide: While my clients' initial presenting problem(s) may vary, there are often common underpinnings, which include low self-esteem, unassertiveness, inability to form and maintain satisfying relationships and/or get needs appropriately met, lack of direction or purpose, feelings of loss of control, etc. These often translate into symptomatology like anxious worry, obsessive or ruminative thinking, depressed mood, impaired decision-making, agitation/irritability, and compulsive/addictive behaviors (e.g., use/abuse of drugs, alcohol, and food struggles). My clients learn how to recognize self-defeating thoughts/behaviors and patterns, as well as how to exercise the healthy control required to break free of the ties that bind. This entails identifying “triggers” (clinically significant exaggerated responses due to past experiences), unlearning maladaptive behaviors, and developing an alternative repertoire of healthy, adaptive coping skills. Creating Lasting Change: Long-term change requires insight and behavior change consistently implemented over time to avoid reflexively making unhealthy choices and repeating problematic behaviors (e.g., to leave home to get away from an alcoholic or abusive parent/spouse only to marry someone with similar issues). Many recognize that either they habitually make poor choices, or they are unable to exit unhealthy situations, but they don’t understand what holds them back (e.g. “why do I feel stuck” or “I know what to do but I can’t seem to do it”). Our work will include identifying and modifying unhealthy roles and scripts (e.g., “I am unworthy or undeserving,” “I need to take care of others at my expense") that render you unable to recognize and appropriately express your needs and impede your ability to make good choices, leading to dissatisfaction in significant life realms (e.g., relationship and career choices). I offer both short-term, solution-oriented therapy for those seeking assistance with focused problems, and longer-term, insight-oriented, therapy for those with more complex issues requiring intervention aimed at breaking pervasive dysfunctional patterns. I help clients heal past hurts, break free of unhealthy current behaviors, and ultimately work towards developing a more satisfying, purposeful, and meaningful life. Additional Information Call or email me for a free 20-minute consultation. For the foreseeable future, this practice is exclusively a Telehealth practice.
