I was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States at the age of 3. I am keenly aware of what it means to identify as 1.5 generation Korean-American - carrying two identities, two cultures, and two languages that continue to challenge my sense of self and now, challenge the way I parent my twin toddlers. There are many life challenges I have learned to face on my own naturally due to the unique circumstances of being an immigrant, but the cost of that at times was my mental health. I understand the despair of depression, but having to power through and be a high achiever. Anxiety became an intimate friend of mine and came knocking on the door once more as I entered into fertility treatments and eventually motherhood. I had to face these old and familiar parts of myself in a unique way. Life never stops, life is changing constantly and unless we invest in ourselves and find ways to understand the deepest parts of us that have been hidden, we will inevitably repeat patterns. The goal I have for myself and for my patients is to break patterns that have pushed us away from being the most authentic versions of ourselves.
