I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in private practice with over a decade of experience working with children and their families in their homes and in the community. I utilize a trauma-focused and resilience-based lens, which means that as your therapist, I honor both your struggle and your strengths in the work we do together. I’m here to help you and your family members achieve your visions while working in connection with your support systems to make sure everyone is on the same page. This can include: collaborating with outside providers such as outpatient therapists, psychiatric providers, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, the school system, as well as friends, partners, or others important to your care and well-being. I do my best work with adolescents who “don’t like therapy” or who have struggled to connect or engage with other therapists in the past. This happens for lots of reasons–but one major one is that sometimes sitting in an office staring at one another just feels too threatening. That’s why I don’t have an office! I meet folks virtually, in-home, or in the community instead. That’s where you live your life, so I’ll meet you where you are. This can be driving around, grabbing a bite to eat, going for a walk on some trails, or whatever feels most comfortable to you and your family. The sessions themselves are often with the individual adolescent, the parents, the whole family, or some other combination, based on your needs. In addition to meeting the adolescent where they are, I collaborate with you and your family to create the vision you all have for yourselves. What I Won’t Do: -Act like an expert on you or your family -Tell you what to think, feel, and do -Promise to have all the answers, or deliver a miracle cure that fixes everything What I Will Do: -Meet you where you all are, both figuratively and literally. Your goals and visions are your own, not mine. -Collaborate extensively with other providers, supports, or systems that can help you thrive and reach your goals -Offer kindness, non judgment, and safety so you can be your authentic self -Be fiercely committed to the work it takes to help everyone through this difficult time If you're looking for a magic wand, or someone to focus on giving you quick tips or strategies to “fix” things, we might not be a good fit. I’d urge caution about anyone promising you that, because the work of therapy is just more complicated than that. But that doesn’t mean change isn’t possible! It just means we have to slow down first, and recognize where small shifts can lead to bigger changes down the line. For adult clients: I also provide individual therapy for young adults, ages 18-35 virtually. If this is you, you can expect me to have a laid back style, a sense of humor, and an authentic presence. Your therapy isn’t about me, but my lived experience and professional training both influence the work, so I’ll be real with you. As a genderqueer, gay therapist I’m particularly passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ communities. I understand the experience of being othered, distanced from, or cut off from support systems for daring to be who we are, and am honored to offer kind space and affirmation for others in my community. I work hard to dismantle the hidden and overt “isms” (racism, sexism, classism, antisemitism etc,) and phobias (transphobia, homophobia, islamophobia, etc.) within and around me through training, honest self-reflection, seeking perspectives different from my own, and a commitment to lifelong learning and unlearning. I believe this is a lifelong journey. In a time of unprecedented backlash against trans identity, I also don’t take lightly the important work of supporting adolescents, adults, and entire families who are on gender journeys. And it is the entire family who takes this journey–not just the young person. I’m honored to be a support for the whole family, and help you all navigate processes that can seem daunting. TESTIMONIALS "We have been working with Erika for several months, and the impact on our family has been transformative. What sets Erika apart is their genuine, child-centered approach. They built rapport with my troubled teen almost immediately. At my teen's request, Erika has taken counseling sessions in the community, including outings to the dog park and Dunkin's. These experiences have made therapy more relatable for my teen who can be uncomfortable with "just talking." Erika is exceptionally kind, creating a safe space where my child feels comfortable sharing and confronting her struggles. As parents, we are beyond grateful for some newfound hope that Erika has brought into our lives. Their expertise and empathy have become an invaluable part of our support system. Highly recommend."
