Therapy with Emily Are you feeling anxious or stuck? We all experience struggles from time to time where we could use more support. Coming to therapy will help you gain a better understanding of who you are, where you come from, and how to cope with life's challenges. I offer a personalized approach to therapy designed to help you discover new insights into yourself and your relationships. I work to create a space where you have the freedom to express yourself without judgement, and leave having felt heard and understood.Together we can map out a way for you to accomplish your goals and make the changes you seek. I work with anxiety, bereavement, relational conflict, low self-esteem, and issues of personal growth. I treat survivors of various trauma, including complex and single events. I use a humanistic client centered / attachment based perspective, drawing from other traditional psychodynamic techniques, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. What is EMDR? EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an integrative therapeutic modality that is highly effective for treating the effects of trauma. Trauma is the emotional response to a terrible and scary event. Effects of trauma can include flashbacks, fear, as well as false beliefs about oneself and the world. For example, a car accident victim may no longer be able to get behind the wheel of a car for fear that another accident may occur. An adult who experiences abuse or neglect in childhood may grow up to believe they are bad or unworthy. This may affect their self-esteem, their career and relationship choices, as well as cause other distressing psychological symptoms. In EMDR we will confront your traumatic memories and heal them so that you are no longer controlled by the intense emotions linked to that memory. Once your trauma and fear no longer control your life, you will be free to move forward unencumbered by the weight your past. The lack of bereavement understanding and support in our society became very apparent to me, and it motivated me to become a support to people who were grieving, struggling, or feeling stuck. No one should have to suffer alone. Experience: I got my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena. Prior to private practice, I worked at Glendale Adventist Alcohol and Drug Services; The Bella Vita, a residential facility for eating disorders; and Family Services Agency, Burbak, where I worked in the residential program for transitional youth, people at risk of homelessness, and survivors of domestic abuse. I've also co-facilitated a group at Our House for adults grieving the loss of the parent. I have completed both levels 1 and 2 of EMDR training from the EMDR Institute, and am working on my certification. I am a certified meditation teacher from The Shambhava School of Yoga in Colorado.
