Introduction

Dr. Emily Wu is a Harvard-trained physician. She is a Double Board-certified psychiatrist by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Adult Psychiatry and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry. She is currently licensed to practice in Texas. She completed a two-year advanced fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital through Harvard Medical School. She did her residency in general Adult Psychiatry at Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. She obtained her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Texas A&M University, graduating summa cum laude. After training, Dr. Wu worked as a staff psychiatrist at Menninger Clinic and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. Her breadth and depth of training and working experiences give her great flexibility in choosing and providing treatment modalities. Dr. Wu is well-versed in both pharmacotherapy and individual psychotherapy for adults, children, and adolescents. She is trained in individual psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and couples therapy. She uses skills-based and insight-based approaches to therapy and integrates medications/pharmacotherapy into her work with patients of all ages. Her approach is holistic, and her practice combines psychological, biological, and social perspectives in providing healthcare. Dr. Wu’s research interests include reducing health disparity and improving culturally sensitive clinical interventions for ethnic/racial minority patients. Her research activities include assessing the parental perception of mental illness among minority youth and evaluating the ethics and efficacy of using smartphone technology to provide mental health care for minorities. Dr. Wu’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Asian Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Clinical Psychiatry News, Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, and the Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic. She has presented nationally and internationally on a range of topics, including the cultural shaping of depression, psychiatry in the digital age, parenting challenges in Chinese immigrant families, utilizing a culturally relevant smartphone app to increase engagement in depression care among Chinese Americans, depression, and suicide among Chinese international students and the development of adolescent acute residential treatment programs in China. Additionally, Dr. Emily Wu has been an active advocate for public mental health. During her residency training, Dr. Emily Wu was elected as the American Medical Association (AMA) Resident-Fellow Delegate via Massachusetts Medical Society. She was accepted as a distinguished Fellow in the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) SAMHSA Minority Fellowship. In 2019, she was elected as the Chair for the APA Minority Fellowship Program and was appointed to the APA Board of Trustee as a non-voting member. She also served as a member of the APA Council for Minority Mental Health/Health Disparity for two years.
