My name is Brooke Aker and I've been a licensed mental health counselor for 16 years, starting my career in a private group practice. I worked 10 years for a not-for-profit in a variety of roles including home-based services through a contract with the Department of Child Services, a therapist working with youth in a Residential living facility and served as the agency's Clinical Director. I love working with teens and adults and that is now my focus in my own practice that I opened in October 2022! For clients under the age of 13 seeking counseling services, I am happy to share resources for therapists who work with children. I see clients who deal with Anxiety, Depression, Adjustment Disorders, Phase of Life Changes, Parenting Support, Grief/Loss, and Trauma. I am trained as an EMDR therapist. As defined on EMDRIA.org, "EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences."
