Introduction

Hi! I'm Dr. Schopfer. I'm a licensed psychologist located in Bethesda, Maryland, and I focus on helping people improve their sleep. Difficulty sleeping can often be overlooked by healthcare providers as it tends to be attributed to or associated with other concerns. When sleep difficulty is addressed, the first (and sometimes only) targeted intervention tends to focus on improving sleep hygiene. I take a different approach. The first thing I focus on is assessing one's current sleeping patterns to gain a better understanding of the overall profile and factors that may be perpetuating the sleep difficulty. In collaboration with the patient, I then use scientifically sound and empirically supported treatment techniques to consolidate and ultimately expand one's sleep ability through targeted behavior change. This typically occurs over the course of 6-8 treatment sessions and without the use of medication. When it's going well, sleep can often be overlooked. When sleep is disrupted, however, it can be felt throughout the rest of the day and can have a significant impact on one's general functioning if left untreated over the long-term. Sleeping Well can mean the difference between spending time with loved ones and cancelling plans in an effort to get just a few more minutes of sleep. So, if you're having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking long before the alarm clock sounds, please feel free to contact me and schedule an appointment. Thanks for your time and I hope you Sleep Well!
