I am Amelia Young, Licensed Professional Counselor. I began my career as a special education teacher but found I really enjoyed working with students in developing their emotional self-regulation skills instead of grammar and spelling, so I went back to school to become a counselor. I have been fully licensed as an LPC since 2018. I enjoy working with clients who may feel alienated in some way. You may be a person suffering from grief from pet loss, miscarriage, or any other unacknowledged loss. You may be the parent of a child receiving special education services feeling judged. You may be having difficulty in your marriage. You may be part of the LGBTQ+ community. You may have suffered from a mood disorder or substance use disorder. You may carry shame from trauma you experienced. I would like to travel with you as you define YOUR values and create a life that you are satisfied with so you can thrive. This may mean working on thought patterns, talking about painful topics, or creating a plan together to reach your goals. I believe in trying, more than anything else. Whether it’s with me or with another therapist, I hope you will keep trying. Brief descriptions of the approaches I use: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing your patterns of thinking and behavior by learning coping skills with the potential that it will improve your symptoms and ability to function. Reality Therapy is a client-centered approach that uses a lot of the same principles as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This method focuses more on the present than the past, and on making choices that lead you closer to your goals in life. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy is a method to deal with trauma using eye movements and client feedback to form new associations between traumatic memories and more helpful memories or information. Gottman Method Couples Therapy works on reducing the damage caused by verbal conflict, increasing closeness, removing barriers, and as a result, increasing understanding.
