My experience/training and approach: I have worked in the field for over 15 years with adults, youth and families utilizing strengths based, psychodynamic, and mindfulness approaches which deal with the challenges of the here and now rather than focusing extensively on the past. The research of the last 20 years in neuroscience has shown the effectiveness of utilizing the body to change what in the past others saw as strictly cognitive psychological issues. Theoretical paradigms of mind/body or "bottom up" approaches such as polyvagal theory ground my practice. More recently I have been trained in Neuro Affective Relation Model (NARM) which combines bottom up and top down approaches to reorganize the developmental trauma that keeps persistent "personality and mental health issues" from subsiding. Here is a great article about NARM. https://www.thecandidly.com/2019/everything-you-should-know-about-narm-the-newest-form-of-trauma-therapy My experience with Somatic Experiencing (SE) focuses on somatic mindfulness, which among other things helps the person practicing it notice and process internal changes in the body during the therapeutic process. In addition to helping persistent emotional challenges, this method has proven its effectiveness in shock/acute trauma. Building on client resources, and specific skills training we avoid replaying pre-existing trauma. I continue to be an active learner and my approach relies on a radical belief in client agency and the importance of the client and therapist relationship as we will build on your strengths together. What we will do on the first day: Before we meet for a full session I will send you brief questionnaires and policy related paperwork. When we are in a 15 min consultation or at our first meeting I will share a bit about my theoretical approach and provide psychoeducation on my approach. I will move on to listening about what you most want to focus on and we will decide on what you most want to accomplish in our session. Throughout the session I will inquire about your insights, emotions and physical responses to ensure we are bringing these into awareness. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/adam-angel-silver-spring-md/813663 Feedback from clients in individual work "My therapy experience with Adam was the best I've ever had. He is a compassionate listener and learner who both empowers and challenges you at the same time. I will carry the tools and framework that we cultivated together for the rest of my life." -Maya "I couldn't see a way out of my depression or relinquish the belief systems that were plaguing me. Adam helped me dismantle those harmful belief systems, understand their origin, and helped me learn to relate to them in a way that was conducive to my highest good." - Akil "Working with Adam was the most effective experience I've ever had with therapy. He helped me get to the root of longstanding issues and connect with my emotional self. I'm extremely grateful for everything I learned from working with him and cannot recommend him enough!" - Liz *all testimonials were given with the permission to publish Groups: Men's perinatal/infant loss group: My wife and I lost our first pregnancy/child at 22 weeks.
