Does Health Net cover mental health?

Yes, nearly all Health Net insurance plans cover mental health. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), mental and behavioral health treatment must be covered as essential health benefits. These include counseling and therapy, as well as inpatient mental and behavioral health care and substance abuse treatment.

Almost all mental disorders, as well as substance use disorders and alcohol and chemical dependency treatment, are covered by all ACA-compliant health insurance.

However, since insurance coverage is based on medical necessity, Health Net may have

more limited coverage options for common life problems like grief and loss, couples and marriage counseling, career counseling, and general relationship issues.

According to the Health Net website: "Most Health Net plan members have access to mental and behavioral healthcare benefits through MHN, a Health Net company. Please see the back of your ID card or your plan materials for your individual benefits."

What is MHN?

MHN, a subsidiary of Health Net, is responsible for administering their mental health services. MHN provides scientifically proven workplace solutions to help companies increase productivity and improve the lives of their employees.

MHN has an extensive provider network with over 63,000 mental health professionals and 1,500 hospitals and treatment facilities.

Employee Assistance Plans (EAPs) and behavioral health services, as well as organizational growth and wellness programs, are all available through MHN.

What benefits does MHN cover?

An MHN behavioral health plan covers medically necessary mental health treatment and substance use disorder treatment.

Benefits typically include:

  • Sessions with a mental health professional (i.e., therapists, psychiatrists, or psychologists)

  • Treatment follow-up and maintenance.
