What is the goal of acceptance and commitment therapy?

Acceptance and commitment therapy encourages patients to accept their feeling and thoughts instead of trying to avoid them. It is premised on the notion that running from a problem only magnifies it and reduces the chances of getting a solution. ACT encourages people to own their problems as a way of resolving them.

ACT enables patients to develop psychological flexibility by equipping them with mindfulness skills. It encourages patients to be in control of their lives and commit to engaging in actions that improve their lives. ACT encourages patients to accept pain and suffering as normal parts of life and develop coping skills instead of avoiding them. ACT requires patients to stop fighting their past and start practicing positive and confident behavior.
