What causes transgenderism?

What causes someone to be trans is not totally clear, though it is often thought of as a combination of biological and environmental factors. In the past few decades, studies have been done trying to identify what causes people to be transgender.

In particular, scientists aim to study the structure of transgender brains vs. cisgender (i.e., people who identify with the gender they were born with) brains. It is likely that genetics, brain structure, and perhaps prenatal exposure to certain hormones may cause people to be born transgender.

In addition, there have been some studied psychological aspects as well, which may relate to brain structure. It's important to remember that transgender refers to the way people identify their gender and how it relates to the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender is a gender identity, which differs from gender expression.

A person could be assigned female at birth, identify as a male, but prefer to wear makeup and dress in skirts, heels, and blouses. How a person chooses to present themselves is their gender expression.
