ADHD stands for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is a disorder that affects many children and adults.
The symptoms of ADHD include the inability to concentrate or focus, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior.
ADHD affects roughly 9.4% of children and 2.5% of adults in the U.S. The condition affects more boys than girls. In children, it is often identified through disruptive behavior at school and problems completing schoolwork.
ADHD manifests in the following three subtypes:
Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive, or
a combination of both.
The inattentive type manifests through inability to pay attention, problems focusing, carelessness, problems organizing work, and being easily distracted.
Hyperactivity manifests through incessant movement, squirming, talking too much, and impatience. Impulsiveness manifests through hasty actions and being socially intrusive.
